چکیده

Drawing on the institution-based view of intellectual property (IP) rights, we argue that “distance” in IP protection strength MNEs’ home and host countries reduces ability MNEs to innovate at foreign subsidiary locations. We contend this logic applies both directions—i.e., (1) downward direction, when originating from stronger regimes weaker regimes, (2) upward regimes. Furthermore, suggest negative effect distance innovation performance will be moderated by internal (strategic) external (institutional) conditions, such as experience, ownership type (full vs. partial), cultural extent scientific labor country. test above relationships using a very large panel data set consisting MNE subsidiary-level manufacturing industry for 15,246 subsidiaries 11,284 parent firms, representing 47 31 covering total 91,347 observations period 2005–2013. Our findings show adverse directions; is more intense case direction; (3) moderating effects vary depending direction distance.

Intellectual Property Rights Protection, Ownership, and Innovation: Evidence from China

Using a difference-in-difference approach, we study how intellectual property right (IPR) protection affects innovation in China in the years around the privatizations of state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Innovation increases after SOE privatizations, and this increase is larger in cities with strong IPR protection. Our results support theoretical arguments that IPR protection strengthens firms’ ...

Bioinformatics and Intellectual Property Protection

This article describes the nature of bioinformatics and how the various components of bioinformatics relate to intellectual property law. The article begins by "decomposing" bioinformatics into three categories: (A) biological sequences such as DNA, RNA, and protein sequences; (B) databases in which these sequences are organized; and (C) software and hardware designed to access, organize, and a...

Modularity and Intellectual Property Protection

Modularity is a means of partitioning technical knowledge about a product or process. When state-sanctioned intellectual property (IP) rights are ineffective or costly to enforce, modularity can be used to hide information and thus protect IP. We investigate the impact of modularity on IP protection by formally modeling the threat of expropriation by agents. The principal has three options to a...

Intellectual Property Protection and Standardisation

This chapter presents the first attempt at analyzing the relationship between strategies to protect intellectual property rights and their impact on the likelihood of joining formal standardization processes, based on a small sample of European companies. On the one hand, theory suggests that the stronger the protection of one’s own technological know-how, the higher the likelihood to join form...
